Today mothers across the nation were celebrated for their hard work and loving character.

And each family celebrates their mom in a different way.

Many mother’s woke up to a day of breakfast in bed and fresh flowers to celebrate their special day.

Giving gifts on this holiday seems like an American tradition and an easy way to celebrate your mother.

“This morning I brought my mom breakfast and she thought it was really cool,” said 4th grader Callie Gilbert.

But giving gifts is actually the last thing this holiday was intended to do.

“It’s to celebrate our mothers and about Anna Jarvis how she started Mother’s Day. Appreciation,” said 4th grader Sarah Swiger.

And appreciation for her mother is why Jarvis started this holiday.

“Anna Jarvis felt that her mother really exemplified what a good mother should be. She had worked a lot during the civil war, she promoted peace, she did things to help with sanitation. And so Anna really thought that we needed to take a time to honor her mother and all mothers for everything they do,” said Chad Proudfoot, foundation member.

But over time the holiday has turned into a more lavish gift giving day with the purchase of spa treatment, jewlery, flowers, candy and dinners.

Originally the only gift given on Mother’s Day was a white carnation, but today the white carnations are saved to only honor those mothers that have passed away.

But the Grafton community still know and honor the true meaning of Mother’s Day.

“That we get to celebrate our mothers and that we know she loves us,” said 4th grader Rebecca Smihal.

The true meaning of Mother’s Day lies in appreciation, not in a gift.
